work in progress in Asheville: below is the new canvas: the east side of the I-240 underpass, downtown Asheville, North Carolina… the painting continues. This will be installed on the Merrimon side of the underpass in September, 2011.
This is a design I created in Photoshop with photographs I took of Charles, a man who plays chess in Pritchard Park every day possible, spring, summer, and fall, and George, who plays some days.
ps. all the pieces are black for sketching purposes; Charles will have the white set…
I am directing this mural under the title of the Asheville Mural Project, a program of the Arts2People 501(c)3 nonprofit organization (arts2people.org). This section is a follow-up of previous murals under this bridge that were painted in collaboration with artists Daniel Beck, Josh Spiceland, Kurt Theasler, Steven Lister, and Harper Leich. I am painting this new piece in collaboration with artist Ian Wilkinson. We painted the entire mural in a studio, on a synthetic canvas that we will paste up on the concrete in the spring, like wallpaper. This technique was pioneered by the Philadelphia Mural Arts Program (muralarts.org) and has many benefits, including freedom of movement (no scaffolding), safety, and relative comfort of a studio (though no heat in a warehouse in winter is not exactly a comfortable setting!).
photos of my other current projects to come….
